Fifty-eight years ago today, Japan
Fifty-eight years ago today, Japan unconditionally surrendered to the Allies, ending WWII. Here's the NYT's front-page story from that day. It offers an understated yet detailed summation of the events leading up to the surrender, and also some good context for the war against Japan. The last section of the article ("Plan on the Emperor") is startlingly eloquent, although the author (four-time Pulitzer-winner Arthur Krock) manages to take a swipe at FDR in the closing paragraph.
130,000 people died in Hiroshima, and 70,000 in Nagasaki. Here's a good page on the atomic bomb attacks.
